The raw materials for making paper are chemical and mechanical pulp. When the wood raw material is disintegrated by cooking it in chemicals, the result is pulp. Mechanical pulp is manufactured by refining or grinding the wood. The raw material for both is pulpwood, which consists of thinning leftovers, the crowns of logs sent to sawmills, and sawdust generated as a by-product of sawmilling. Recycled fibre is a valuable and important paper raw material especially in Central Europe, and its use decreases energy consumption in the manufacturing process. In the manufacturing of paper, different pulps are mixed to achieve the desired paper grade.

Paper is just paper – right?
