Herb-rich heath forests are moist, but drier than herb-rich forests. The soil consists of till or clay which is covered with decayed, dirt-like humus. Trees grow fast in herb-reach heath forests. The dominant species is usually Nordic Spruce, but it is accompanied with various deciduous trees. The shrub layer typically contains species such as Common Juniper, willows, and Raspberry (Rubus idaeus). Other species that are characteristic of herb-rich heath forests include Wood Sorrel (Oxalis acetosella) and Lady Fern (Athyrium filix-femina). There are plenty of different moss species, but the moss cover is not very thick.
