Planting the correct tree species in the right place is the best guarantee for growth. The subsoil and the water resources dictate which tree species grow where – and what is worth planting. Indeed, Finnish commercial forests usually consist of northern species that are typical for the area. A forest expert can determine the type of subsoil by simply studying the vegetation. The subsoil provides a basis for classifying forests into vegetation types. The most important forest types in the northern woods are dry heath forests, mesic (‘moist’) heath forests, and herb-rich heath forests.
