FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) is an international organisation founded in 1993. It accepts both organisations and private individuals as members. FSC promotes forest management standards that are environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable. Finland’s national FSC standard was endorsed in spring 2011. The proportion of FSC-certified forests in Finland is roughly 10% of the forested area.

FSC and the certifiers base their operations on ten main principles and related forest management criteria. The principles define the general ecological, social and economic characteristics used by the FSC to evaluate the sustainability of forest use.
