Scots Pine (Pinus Sylvestris)
Scots Pine belongs to a genus of coniferous trees that includes around one hundred tree species. It is the only pine species that grows in Finland and could be loosely translated as ‘forest pine’. Scots Pine can survive on very few nutrients and has managed to almost completely overtake Finland – except for the northernmost fells of Lapland. In hospitable habitats, the Scots Pine can reach heights of 30 to 50 metres. The average life span of Scots Pine is 250–350 years, but particularly in Lapland they can live as long as 600 to 800 years. As Scots Pine ages, its growth slows down and it develops a broad, flat crown. Scots Pine requires plenty of light, so they are often supplanted by other tree species in the best habitats.
