Rowan (Sorbus aucuparia)
Rowan, or mountain-ash, is a hearty species and common throughout Finland. The sub-species glabrata can also be found in northern Finland. Rowan is a pioneer species that forms brushwood on open ground and undergrowth in forest stands. Rowan is often used as a decorative tree in yards. The species needs a lot of light and good soil. Rowan seedlings grow fast, and the tree can grow to a height of 4 to 5 metres. Rowan trees branch out easily, often forming a shrub-like tree composed of many thin trunks. The largest single rowan trees can be as tall as 19 metres, and the diameter at the base can be up to 70 centimetres. The value of Rowan trees as a joinery material is increasing. Rowan berries are used in, for example, preserves and juices.
