Aspen (Populus tremula)
Aspen trees are found throughout Finland. Aspens require abundant light and a good, nutrient-rich habitat for growth. In ideal circumstances, the Aspen grow quickly a straight trunk that can be over 30 metres long with branches only high in the upper parts. Aspen leaves make an easily recognisable rustling sound. Aspens live to be over 100 years of age, but they are prone to disease. Tree stands containing only aspens are rare; they are generally found growing amid spruce trees. Aspen trees enrich forest biodiversity, as many wildlife species thrive in aspen habitats. The species is suitable as raw material for use by the joinery industry, and for mechanical and chemical pulp manufacture. Moreover, aspen is the material of choice for sauna boards.
