You can find marked and maintained campfire sites on both state and municipal lands, and you must build your fire on such sites. You may not light an open fire without the landowner’s permission anywhere else. You may not fell or damage trees for kindling or collect bark or cones without the landowner’s permission. You can collect kindling that has fallen to the ground without consulting the landowner, but you may not use a tree, even if it has fallen down. When a forest fire warning is in effect, you may not build an open fire even on marked or maintained sites; these are times when you should use a camping cooker. If a fire you have set gets out of hand, you are liable for the damages as the builder of the fire.
