Wood volume is expressed in special volume units. A stacked cubic metre (stm3) corresponds in volume to one cubic metre of neatly stacked wood. A loose cubic metre (lm3), also referred to as “loose thrown cord”, corresponds to one cubic metres of loosely piled wood. A solid cubic metre (sm3) refers to a cubic metre of wood without any gaps. Old measurement units for firewood are the stere, which corresponds to one stacked cubic metre, and a fathom, or four stacked cubic metres.
